Job Placements for TESOL Trainees

ESL teachers are given a guaranteed placement in schools across Thailand after successful completion of the American TESOL Institute’s Special Thai program. There is a wide array of educational institutes in Thailand ranging from temple schools to small villages and from private schools to the more elite ones.

The descriptions of the ESL jobs in Thailand are as follows:

  • ESL teachers normally teach a maximum of 24 classes per work. Most schedules vary between 20-22 hours per week. Classes are usually 50-60 minutes depending on the school. Most ATI teacher will teach each class once per week.

  • ESL teachers will have to hand in a lesson plan towards the end of each month.

  • For the Thai schools, the ESL teachers will work at the school Monday – Friday from the hours of 0800 – 1630 hrs. This is only a general timing; some schools might have different timings. Language Schools have their teaching sessions mostly during evening hours or weekends.

  • Thai schools will observe national holidays along with Saturdays and Sundays. The language schools, though, will be busier during weekends.

  • Morning Assembly usually starts at 0800 hrs. The attendance is mandatory for the ESL teachers.

  • ATI teachers will prepare creative lesson plans at the start of each week for each grade/class that they teach. Sometimes the teachers might be asked by the schools or us to provide examples of lesson plans.

  • ESL teachers will act in a manner which befits the profession both inside and outside of school. You will be a representative for ATI, your country and most importantly yourself.

  • Attendance/Punctuality

  • Smart/Neat appearance and dress

  • Organize lesson plans

  • Adaptable to Thai culture

  • Cordial relationship with Thai teachers

  • ESL teachers will dress in an appropriate fashion

  • In schools ATI male teachers are expected to wear trousers. Jeans and cargos are a strict no-no. Shirts should be formal or semi-formal restricted only to buttoned up/collared or short sleeve. Golf Shirts are not appreciated. Ties are required on Mondays and on all special occasions/days/festivities etc. Some schools might ask you to wear ties on a daily basis. Black or brown shoes are definitely accepted but please do not wear running shoes or sandals. Males are required to be clean shaven. Facial hair is acceptable but only it is trimmed and presentable on a day to day basis. Earrings or visible facial rings (eyebrow, chin, lips, nose etc) are not at all acceptable. Visual tattoos are not at all acceptable. Male hair should be short and presentable. If you possess long hair then that should be pulled back and made presentable.

  • Outside schools, ESL teachers are free to wear what they please. But please remember that no matter how hot it is it is not acceptable in Thai society not to wear a shirt at all unless you are in a beach.

  • Female ATI teachers are expected to wear knee-length or longer skirts with a presentable blouse. No low cut or revealing ones please. Shoes should be formals. Open toes or high heels are acceptable but sandals or running shoes are a strict no-no. Visible facial rings (eyebrow, chin, lips, nose etc) are not accepted. But ESL teachers can wear earrings but not excessive in number. Visual tattoos are not accepted.

  • Outside schools female ATI teachers can wear anything as they please but no revealing clothes please at any time in Thai society.
 Dress codes in Thai government schools may appear to be rigid and strict at times but first impressions are very important in Thailand. If you are an ESL teacher you are expected to dress accordingly.

  • ESL teachers will participate in an English club for students once per week. This is scheduled in school hours at the same time as the various other schools. This can be usually be done with a group or any other foreign/ESL teachers in the school.

  • ATI teachers will respect all rules and regulations unless otherwise notified by us

  • ESL teachers will keep organized records of students’ weekly attendance and grades and additional notes, if any.

  • Teachers will evaluate the listening and speaking skills of students each year.

  • ATI teachers will perform the greeting activity once a week. This is simply greeting the students and parents from roughly 0730 to 0800 hrs. All Thai teachers rotate this responsibility as well.

  • Teachers will perform the 1 minute activity once per week. This includes planning a short speech to present during the morning assembly in English. Topics may include public service type assignments, riddles, tongue twisters etc. This can be performed in a group with any other foreign teachers in the school.

  • Star Talk activity should be performed at the start of each class by the ESL teachers. This includes teaching the students a short introduction and having them introduce to the class by using the format given by you.

  • Teachers will attend one English camp for their school per semester on dates which will be arranged by the school. No formal preparation is required though attendance and participation is solicited from the ATI teachers. These English camps generally fall on a Saturday and they run from 0800 to 1600 hrs.

  • ATI teachers will perform an after school English class per week for Thai students. This can be performed as a group with other foreign teachers or as a split. This does not count towards the limit of 24 classes per week.

  • ESL teachers will be at school for all non-Thai national holidays. This includes Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Easter, Valentines Day etc. Most schools will have special celebrations on these days but you, as an ESL teacher, should be present as you will be considered as a resident expert on Western holidays.
