Teaching English abroad can mean much more than just spending a gap year. In fact TEFL teachers can actually build a successful and diverse career for themselves.

What Prospective Employers are looking for?

  • TEFL Certification – TESOL or equivalent
  • Native English Speaker or equivalent ability
  • Degree Level Education or equivalent qualification
  • Culture Sensitivity and interpersonal skills

English teaching jobs do not mean being restricted to a teaching career in schools. Within the school you have students ranging from 3 to 16 years so it is up to you to choose the age level you are comfortable with. Apart from school teaching, the other places where a TEFL certificate can help you enter are:

Language Schools – these are not regular schools but language centers that cater to students to of all age groups after school or office hours. The programs or courses on offer maybe twice or thrice a week for 1 to 2 hours for a period of 3 to 6 months. You may be paid hourly on a part-time basis or be absorbed as full time faculty.

Corporate Training – Companies want their employees to communicate effectively, make clinching presentations and close deals and in order to do so the English language skills need to be enhanced. So corporate trainers who teach Business English are highly paid professionals and a TEFL certificate is all that they require for the job.

Voice and Accent Trainers – ESL teachers with a native accent are sought after to help the callers develop a neutral or a native language accent. Techniques that you learn on the TEFL/TESOL course help you to train others to acquire the right accent and speaking skills.

Soft Skill Trainers – in this world of cut-throat competition it is imperative to know how to conduct yourself. How to face an interview, what is the correct way to dress, how to make small talk, what is considered to be polite and what is not, what are table manners etc are only some of the questions that needs proper attention and detailing. All these constitute soft skills. You, a TEFL teacher, along with communication skills can be instrumental in changing lives.
